A System for Real-time Parallel Scientific Computation and Visualization using the IBM Blue Gene/L Supercomputer

چکیده
The rapid growth of seismic, biological, and similar data sets has made computation and visualization an increasingly complex task. Due to the inherit architectural differences between supercomputing and visualization hardware, a system for realtime display of these data sets must be carefully designed. We present such a system, comprising all aspects of computation, communication, and visualization implemented on the IBM Blue Gene supercomputer, coupled with a grid of high resolution IBM T221 monitors. We use a socket-based communication scheme to pass computational output to the display, which is powered by IBM Deep Computing Visualization using Scalable Visual Networking. We illustrate this system using a 3-D elastic wave propogation model example.

Terascale turbulence computation using the FLASH3 application framework on the IBM Blue Gene/L system
Understanding the nature of turbulent flows remains one of the outstanding questions in classical physics. Significant progress has been recently made using computer simulation as an aid to our understanding of the rich physics of turbulence. Here, we present both the computer science and the scientific features of a unique terascale simulation of a weakly compressible turbulent flow that inclu...
متن کاملParallel Volume Rendering on the IBM Blue Gene/P
Parallel ray casting volume rendering is implemented and tested on an IBM Blue Gene distributed memory parallel architecture. Data are presented from experiments under a number of different conditions, including dataset size, number of processors, low and high quality rendering, offline storage of results, and streaming of images for remote display. Performance is divided into three main sectio...
متن کاملCoupling Massively Parallel Volume Rendering with Autostereoscopic 3D Display Environments
Scientific datasets are growing at incredible rates, resulting in two challenges for visualization researchers and domain scientists: maintaining performance and extracting meaningful content. These tasks have always been goals of scientific visualization, but their importance – and difficulty – grows with the scale of the data. At Argonne National Laboratory, we have been attacking these two c...
متن کاملOverview of molecular dynamics techniques and early scientific results from the Blue Gene project
The Blue Genet project involves the development of a highly parallel supercomputer, the coding of scalable applications to run on it, and the design of protein simulations that take advantage of the power provided by the new machine. This paper provides an overview of analysis techniques applied to scientific results obtained with Blue Matter, the software framework for performing molecular dyn...
متن کاملEnabling Loosely-Coupled Serial Job Execution on the IBM BlueGene/P Supercomputer and the SiCortex SC5832
Our work addresses the enabling of the execution of highly parallel computations composed of loosely coupled serial jobs with no modifications to the respective applications, on largescale systems. This approach allows new-and potentially far larger-classes of application to leverage systems such as the IBM Blue Gene/P supercomputer and similar emerging petascale architectures. We present here ...
